Because the JOCMS is running a seismic survey in conjunction with the magnetic measurements, we need to be careful of operating the air guns if there are protected species spotted near the ship (e.g., whales, dolphins, or other cetaceans). The protected species observers keep a constant eye on the sea looking for these species so we don't harass them unnecessarily.
